The Passions - The Swimmer

On this date in 1980, The Passions released their third single, "The Swimmer". The B side was "War Song". The A side appeared on their second album, Thirty Thousand Feet Over China. The B side was a non-LP track that was added on a later CD re-release. The single was re-released later with a different B side. The London new wave band released three albums before disbanding in 1983. Original bassist Claire Bidwell left the band in 1980 to join The Wall.

Rubber City Rebels

On this date in 1980, Rubber City Rebels released their self-titled debut album. It contained the singles, "Young And Dumb" and "Bluer Than Blue". The power pop/proto punk band was originally from Akron, Ohio but relocated to Los Angeles. They released only one full album (plus a split LP with Bizarros) and three singles before disbanding in 1988. They are back together and recently released a new record.

Poly Styrene - Talk In Toytown

On this date in 1980, Poly Styrene released her debut solo single, "Talk In Toytown". It was backed by "Sub Tropical". Both tracks appeared on her debut solo album, Translucence. Poly Styrene had formerly been the lead singer of X-Ray Spex. She became a Hare Krishna soon afterwards and her musical career slowed considerably. She reunited with X-Ray Spex in 1995 to release the band's second album, Conscious Consumer, their first since 1978.
